H1N1 Talk - January 2010 January’s fun social event was combined with a valuable health education seminar. Dr. Patrick Tang (MD, PhD, FRCPC) presented a talk on “The Hunt for Unknown & Unusual Viruses. He discussed new technologies to diagnose novel & emerging infection diseases, including the initial identification of the novel pandemic H1N1 influenza virus in BC. Dr. Tang is head of the Translational Research in Microbiology Program and head of the Mycobacteriology/TB Laboratory at the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia. His research interests are in the application of bioinformatics and genomics to medical microbiology. He is involved in both the development of new diagnostic technologies and the optimization of existing molecular diagnostics for viruses, bacteria and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
