ACCP Founding Director Bennie Yung

ACCP Founding Director Bennie Yung, 15 December 1941 - 21 March 2009

ACCP mourns the loss of founding director Mr. Bennie Yung, a great leader of the Vancouver Chinese Community. On March 21st 2009, Bennie passed away peacefully from cancer at the Richmond Hospital. He is survived by his beloved wife Juliana, sons Eric and Matthew, daughter-in-law Grace as well as grandchildren Megan and Evan.

Bennie immigrated to Canada in 1973 and has since called British Columbia home. Being a Certified General Accountant, Bennie was well versed with both accounting practices and financial management in Canada. Bennie had been a proprietor of a real estate development, management and investment company for almost 20 years. He had lived in Richmond, British Columbia, for 30 years and made significant contributions towards the social and political communities. His contributions to the society were recognised by an award of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal of Canada in 2003. In 2006, Bennie was named as one of the 100 most influential Chinese-Canadians in BC by the Vancouver Sun “whose talents and world views greatly enrich our shared life as British Columbians."

Since its conception in 1999, Bennie had made major contributions to ACCP. Bennie was a founding director and one of the 5 co-signees on ACCP’s original bylaws. He was instrumental in organising the two round table meetings of all three levels of elected Chinese-Canadian politicians held in 2000 and 2002 and several fundraising galas in the early years of ACCP. Bennie was always ready to help by giving valuable advice, rolling up his sleeves or pulling out his cheque book. It was an honour for us at ACCP to call Bennie one of our own.

Being an advocate for having a fulfilling and healthy livelihood, he was involved in numerous community organisations and had held many volunteer positions and significant government appointments such as: Founding Director of the Association of Chinese Canadian Professionals, Board Member of the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Board Member of the Greater Vancouver Crime Stoppers, Vice-chair of Richmond’s Sister City Committee, Member of the Chinese Community Advisory Committee to the BC Premier, Founding President of the International Development Assistance Society of Canada, President of the Federal Liberal Party of Canada for the Richmond riding and Member of the China/Hong Kong Market Advisory Committee of the Premier’s Asian Pacific Trade Council.
