History of the ACCP
The Birth of ACCP
The birth of ACCP marks a significant and exciting step of bringing together professional people of Chinese descent who are dedicated to community advocacy and service for the Chinese. Because of strong interest in the concept and need to facilitate collaboration and networking amongst Chinese professionals, a small group including 2 physicians, 2 lawyers, 2 dentists, and 2 accountants met in February, 1999 to discuss the possibility of forming a new association. This was the beginning of the ACCP. The ACCP Steering Committee gradually expanded to include other professionals including engineers, pharmacist, and researchers. The committee set out as its initial task to define the mission and goals of this association which include, in brief: advocacy on issues relating to Chinese and the community at large, reducing language and cultural barriers for Chinese through community education, and mentoring of youths.
In carrying out its stated vision, the Steering Committee organized two successful community projects for 1999. A Professional Careers Day for high school students was held on May 30, 1999 at the Oakridge auditorium, co-sponsored by the Vancouver School Board and SUCCESS. This was followed by Health Symposium '99 on July 11, 1999, a one-day health education event with lectures and workshops for the Chinese community co-organized with SUCCESS. The ACCP is indebted to all those individuals who volunteered their time as organizers and speakers who made these worthy endeavours possible.
After months of meetings and brainstorming sessions, the ACCP Incorporation Committee, along with the ACCP Steering Committee, finalised the constitution and by-laws of ACCP. The constating documents were submitted to the Registrar of Companies for registration and ACCP was incorporated on May 29, 2000. The full text of ACCP's constitution and by-laws can be obtained from any board member or its registered office.
We thank the dedicated individuals on the Steering Committee for their hard work and commitment. They are exemplary citizens who lead extremely busy lives yet volunteer their time to give something meaningful back to our society. The ACCP, while unique in its vision and potential, is still in its infancy and needs the support of its members to realize its goals. ACCP welcomes new members as well as your input and participation.
Thanks to all ACCP steering committee members!
